Design Concept
Inspired by "The Three-Body Problem," a classic challenge in celestial mechanics, where the gravitational forces between three celestial bodies, considered as point masses in the universe, mutually influence each other, making their trajectories extremely difficult to predict. The designer integrates elements such as gravity, trajectories, and celestial bodies from the three-body system with the hours, minutes, and seconds of time to create the unique sci-fi-inspired Three-Body Series watches. The series includes two models: "Three-Body: Snow Silver" and "Three-Body: Ink Black."
"Tomorrow, at midnight, at exactly midnight, go outside and look up at the sky. Has the universe ever winked at you?" - The Three-Body Problem (2024). In the world of author Liu Cixin's "The Three-Body Problem," an accidental event opens the door to the universe, allowing us to perceive existences beyond humanity, where different species in different positions ponder the same thing: "survival." By understanding the state of the three-body system through various layers across different timelines, it presents a chaotic interplay of gravity, leading to repeated cultural extinctions. The cosmic scale of time is unimaginable to humans. Through this work and the three-body concept, combined with the medium of time, elements of celestial bodies, paths, and intersections are used to showcase the unique appearance of the Three-Body watch.
To represent the space, time, and interconnections within the three-body system, the designer uses a grid pattern as the base to convey the sense of coordinates, placing each point within a visual space. The central black hair-spun circle represents a strong central gravity, while the hour, minute, and second hands are represented by three different sizes of circles and dots. Through the continuous intersection, fusion, and separation of these three circles, moments of constant interaction between the three bodies are depicted. Luminous effects are applied to the three celestial bodies and time digits, allowing time to be seen even in the dark. Finally, the paths of the three celestial bodies are represented by dashed lines, creating a seemingly predictable yet potentially deviant trajectory, adding unpredictability to the mysterious cosmic time, leading to either survival or extinction.
