Design Concept
Inspired by the classic celestial mechanics problem, the "Three-Body Problem," where three celestial bodies, considered as point masses in a universe, mutually influence each other through gravity, making their trajectories extremely difficult to predict. The designer integrates elements such as gravity, lines, and celestial bodies from the Three-Body Problem with the hours, minutes, and seconds of time to create the unique sci-fi Three-Body Series watches. The series includes two models: "Three-Body: Snow Silver" and "Three-Body: Ink Black."
Tomorrow, at midnight, at exactly midnight, go outside and look up at the sky. Has the universe ever winked at you? - The Three-Body Problem (2024). In Liu Cixin's "Three-Body Problem" world, a chance event opens the door to the universe, making us feel the existence beyond humanity. Different species are in different positions, yet they contemplate the same thing: "survival." Through different layers of understanding the Three-Body state across various timelines, it is a chaotic, gravitational interaction that leads to successive cultural extinctions. The cosmic scale of time is unimaginable to humans. Through this work and the Three-Body concept, combined with time as a medium, and elements of celestial bodies, paths, and interweaving, the unique appearance of the Three-Body watch is brought to life.
To represent the space, time, and interweaving within the Three-Body Problem, the designer uses a grid pattern as the base to convey the sense of coordinates, placing each point within visual space. The central black hairline circle represents strong central gravity, while the hour, minute, and second hands are expressed through three sizes of circles and dots. Through the continuous intertwining, merging, and splitting of these three circles, the moments of constant influence between the three bodies are depicted. The luminous effect is applied to the three celestial bodies and time numbers, allowing time's movement to be seen even in the dark. Finally, the paths of the three celestial bodies are represented by dashed lines, suggesting a seemingly predictable yet potentially deviating possibility, adding an unpredictable element to mysterious cosmic time. Ultimately, is it survival or extinction?
