Damascus Steel Series: Recreating the Top Metal Forging Technology of the 17th Century

A Taiwan-based team has designed and developed a new series of Damascus steel watches, created by designer Yuni Hsieh in collaboration with a Taiwanese metal technology factory, combining the beauty of historical culture with modern technology to produce a stunning craftsmanship of hundred-layer Damascus steel watches.

Damascus steel, also known as "silk in steel," is a work of art that combines performance and aesthetics. It is the perfect metallurgical technology pursued by ancient people and is also one of the world's heritages. It is currently the most difficult metal forging technique. Due to the extremely complex and time-consuming process of weaving Damascus steel, it is a stunning craftsmanship that combines historical culture with modern technology.

  • Used by the Three Great Blades of the Medieval World

In 12th century Europe, during the Crusades' first invasion of the Middle East, a group of soldiers in the Syrian capital of "Damascus" wielded swords that could slice through floating feathers in mid-air. These incredibly sharp blades gave the soldiers an unmatched advantage in battle, and thus the Crusaders named the sword "Damascus Steel." It is one of the three great blades of the medieval world, renowned for its formidable strength, sharpness, and beautiful patterns, and played a significant role in the power games of the medieval era.

  • The Perfect Metallurgical Craftsmanship of Ancient Times

Damascus steel is renowned for its anti-breaking properties, ductility, and sharpenability, as well as its unique texture feature known as the "Mohammedan pattern." However, as centuries have passed, the forging technique has gradually been lost. Nowadays, various countries around the world keep trying different methods in the hope of reproducing the unique power and charm of Damascus steel.

  • The Texture and Feel Created by Time

Due to the extremely complex and time-consuming process of creating Damascus steel, it is also known as one of the most difficult metal techniques of the medieval period. This blend of strength and flexibility, along with its unique patterned details, is like the annual rings of a tree, the waves of the sea, or the clouds in the sky - constantly evolving and changing over time. Each new pattern that emerges at every moment presents the unique beauty and novelty of nature.

DESIGN CONCEPT

Perfect Combination of Historical Craftsmanship and Modern Design

In order to fully showcase the texture and characteristics of Damascus steel, a deep etching technique was used on the surface to make the patterns of Damascus steel more pronounced with a sense of depth. In terms of design, the watch face was enlarged and reduced, allowing the forged surface of Damascus steel to be perfectly displayed inside the mirror. The watch also features a high-quality anti-glare sapphire crystal glass surface, as well as a Japanese-made ultra-thin quartz movement and a Swiss-made automatic winding mechanical movement. The watch crown is sculpted into a unique shape, and the final touch is the handmade Italian leather strap, all designed to showcase the power and beauty of Damascus steel.

  • We shape layers and create texture variations of different degrees and forms through constant steel extrusion, forging, and cutting. We have designed two series of Damascus steel watches, "Cloud" for the quartz watch and "Mohammed" for the automatic mechanical watch, to showcase the beauty of the material.

STORY OF TIME

The historical patterns, natural patterns, and time patterns, all engraved with your own story.

Due to the numerous production restrictions and high costs associated with Damascus steel, incorporating it into complex watch structures often results in prohibitively high prices. Therefore, we constantly modify our designs and manufacturing processes, allowing this historically and culturally rich material to be successfully crafted within a manageable cost. To replicate the lost techniques and patterns of Damascus steel, experienced metal craftsmen must gather their skills, wisdom, and focus to perfectly control the fire and create each unique pattern.

  • The patterns presented by Damascus steel are like fingerprints of humans. Each wristwatch has its own genes and uniqueness, showing the unique and profound taste and romance of each person.
  • I believe that a watch represents not only a timepiece, or a decorative accessory, but also a person's taste and attitude. And a watch with a story behind it is suitable for a person with a story to wear.
